Marcelino is looking for new challenges after his departure from Olympique Marseille. In the meantime, his experience and football knowledge are well valued in the media. One of the most prestigious, ‘The Athletic’, offered its readers an interview with the coach.
“I still speak often with Pablo, he has been my friend for many years,” Marcelino says. “There was always the maximum respect and honesty, on both sides, in all our dealings. He has decided to stay for the responsibility he feels at all levels”

When reviewing his successes on the bench, MGT points out which of them tops the list.“Winning the Copa del Rey with Valencia was my best satisfaction on a professional level, no doubt,” Marcelino says. “Then we won the Supercopa with Athletic Bilbao, beating Real Madrid and Barcelona in the space of four days. But that was during the pandemic, and football without fans is not the same.
The Asturian coach confesses to being a great admirer of the Premier League: “The Premier League is like the NBA of football: lots of very good players, extraordinary organisation of the competition, many teams who have the same level of budget and squad.” But he does not forget the potential of Spanish football: “La Liga has two of the three or five biggest clubs in the world,” Marcelino says.
Looking at his career as a whole, he vindicates the work carried out with his coaching staff: “We have coached many good teams in LaLiga and in most cases we have achieved our objectives or even surpassed them”. After referring to the possibility he had of being Spain coach (“it would have been a great honour”), he sent a message to potential suitors: “If both parties are convinced, we will take on the new challenge with the greatest possible ambition and enthusiasm”.
