Marcelino García Toral

The leader of the Asturian coaches

The match against Valencia made Marcelino the coach from the Principality with the most games under his management in the First Division.

On the way to 20 years since his debut as a coach in the First Division, Marcelino García has reached 395 matches in the top category. An impressive figure that makes the current Villarreal coach the Asturian with the most matches under his management in the top league.

These 395 matches (shared between Recreativo, Racing, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia and Athletic) have allowed him to overtake José Manuel Díaz Novoa (394) in this ranking. Behind Novoa, a reference in the 80s and 90s (he has coached Sporting Gijón the most games), are Benito Floro (272), Paquito (163) and Luis Enrique (152).

With nine games to go until the end of the 2023/24 season (and with a contract until June 2026), Marcelino has plenty of room to build on an already historic record.

Several media outlets highlighted the achievement, including Asturian television (RTPA) and El Comercio, with whom the coach commented on it. “I didn’t know that I had already played so many games until the other day when they sent me the stats when it had already happened. It is a source of pride for me to reach this figure, I never imagined when I started coaching that I would be able to spend so many years enjoying my passion. I have been lucky enough to have a loyal coaching staff and we have been able to manage many players and people in big clubs that have helped me to reach these figures and be at the level of coaches of that category. I continue to work with enthusiasm and we hope to achieve a few more”.
