The list of awards and distinctions that Marcelino García Toral accumulates continues to grow. While the ceremony of his award as the favourite son of Villaviciosa remains fresh, the coach has received the 2022 commerce award, in the sports category. Year after year, the oldest newspaper in the Principality seeks to recognize “excellence in all areas of society and applauds those who make Asturias advance.”
In addition to Marcelino, at the Gala held at the Jovellanos Theater in Gijón, the NGO Expoaction (in the Social Action category), the journalist Juan Ramón Lucas (Projection of Asturias), the researcher Juan Fueyo (Science), the Roxu crane society (Business Initiative) and the poet Olvido García Valdés (Culture).
“I want to remember that we can all be involved in growing Asturias. I am; I don’t know if I will get it, but I try, ”said the coach, honoured for sharing recognition with top-level people in their respective fields.
Outstanding institutional presence
At the gala, also intervened Adrián Barbón, president of the Principality of Asturias, and Ana González, mayor of Gijón. Barbón spoke of Marcelino as a “respected reference,” while González highlighted his career: “A great player and coach to remember for his dedication and involvement, rigour and elegance.”
A trajectory that has taken him to several clubs, both as a footballer and coach. A career full of successes in different categories (promotions to Segunda B with CD Lealtad, and to La Liga with Recreativo of Huelva, Real Zaragoza and Villarreal CF) and at the top of Spanish football (Copa del Rey in 2019 with Valencia CF and Spanish Super Cup in 2021 with Athletic Club).
