Marcelino García Toral

A role model for Asturian football

'La Nueva España' recognised Marcelino García Toral as the best coach of last season. "I take the opportunity to watch football and enjoy it, and I am waiting for the right project to arrive," he noted.

It could not fail at a gala dedicated to the most outstanding Asturian football in the 2021/22 season. The ‘La Nueva España’ award recognised Marcelino as the best coach of the First, Second, First and Second RFEF. The act of the Club Prensa Asturiana produced very emotional moments, such as the minute of silence in memory of the recently deceased Pelayo Novo, a former Real Oviedo football player. Pedro Díaz, David Costas, Borja Bastón and Uros Djurdjevic were also distinguished.

Marcelino was seated next to Miguel López-Cedrón, former player and president of UD Llanera. He received loud applause from those attending the ‘La Nueva España gala, the Principality’s historical newspaper’. At the end of the act, he answered some questions about the current situation and his plans. “I live in Gijón, which is my home. I do sports in the morning: a lot of cycling and some gym. I watch a lot of football, and I take the opportunity to spend time with the family,” he recounted about a few months that are allowing him to disconnect and recharge for the next challenge.

Given the interest in the next step in his career, the Careñes coach appealed to prudence: “I always want to train, but when you’re not working, you have to be calm and make good decisions. In addition, starting with a team in the middle of the season is difficult, and you will have more chances of being wrong than right. I now take the opportunity to watch football and enjoy it. I’m waiting for the right project to come along.”

At the Asturian football party, conversations about the most emblematic teams in the region are a must. “I trust in the salvation of Sporting and Oviedo; they have a good cushion of points and human material to avoid difficulties at the qualifying level”, declared Marcelino, who, in his monitoring of national and international football, always has a place for local clubs.
