Marcelino García Toral

“The idea is to find an exciting project”

Marcelino spoke in 'El País' about his expectations for the future, his vision of football and some names

Marcelino García Toral granted an interview to ‘El País’ in which several interesting issues of current national and international football were addressed. The conversation in Gijón with Ladislao J. Moñino took place shortly before Luis Enrique announced the call for the Qatar World Cup, so the reference to the Spanish team and its possible members was mandatory. One of them was Nico Williams. “It’s different, in Spain there aren’t many of those profiles like in other countries like France,” said the coach, who also placed Ansu Fati as a player outside the dominant pattern. His words had prophetic overtones. Nico and Ansu were called by Luis Enrique.

During the interview, which can be read both in the printed edition and on the web, Marcelino reviewed his professional situation (“the idea is to find an exciting project, in line with our experience and the good results obtained”), some of his footballing ideas (“systems are relative, I am not dogmatic and I adapt”) or the list of teams that catch his attention (“I like City, Liverpool, Madrid’s high-intensity games, Real, Athletic , Naples…”).

In the talk there was also room for proper names, such as Carlo Ancelotti (“he is very intelligent, speaks simply, but of course, without a desire for prominence and explains very well what football is”) or Diego Simeone (“the fact of being 11 years achieving the objectives has an incalculable merit”).
