In addition to the remarkable boost in the standings, Villarreal’s good run in the league in recent weeks has allowed Marcelino to reach a milestone. Following the Castellón side’s 2-3 win away to Real Betis, the Asturian now has 600 points as a coach in the Primera División, an achievement that takes him onto a list occupied by illustrious names.
According to information published in X by Pedro Martín, a specialist in numbers and statistics for COPE, Marcelino is the seventh coach to accumulate the most points in the First Division so far this century. He is within striking distance of the sixth in the ranking, Javier Aguirre (the Mexican has 611). Ahead of him are Emery, Caparrós, Pellegrini -precisely his rival on the last matchday-, Valverde and Simeone.
García Toral has achieved those 600 points after 394 games (162 wins, 114 draws and 118 defeats). Villarreal’s recent results in La Liga – four wins and four draws in the last eight games, including three consecutive wins – suggest that the 600 will soon be behind them.
