Marcelino García Toral

Back with his neighbours at La Vuelta

Marcelino was the protagonist in Villaviciosa, the starting point of the ninth stage of La Vuelta.

The Asturian romance with La Vuelta has experienced yet another brilliant chapter in the 2022 edition. A scenario of many historical stages, the show moved on this occasion to Marcelino’s home, Villaviciosa. This fact and the coach’s passion for cycling made his presence at the sporting event inevitable.

The ninth stage started in the neighbourhood, where the coach took his first steps, ending at the top of Les Praeres in Nava. A special day began on a sunny morning, with the streets full of people. It was the second time (the first was in 2020) that Villaviciosa hosted the stage start in La Vuelta. Well-remembered former cyclists, such as Óscar Freire, Fernando Escartín or Samuel Sánchez (with whom Marcelino had the opportunity to talk), were around.

Before the start, the Careñes technician posed with a banner in support of the work of ‘El Sueño de Vicky’, a foundation for childhood cancer research. Next, he was in the front row in the traditional ribbon cutting with which the stage began, in charge of Alejandro Vega, mayor of Villaviciosa. Along with them, authorities such as Javier Guillén, director of La Vuelta; Lydia Espina, Minister of Education of the Principality of Asturias; Graciela Blanco, Deputy Minister of Tourism or Pepu Hernández, former national basketball coach and world champion in 2006.

Afterwards, he shared moments with several members of some teams, such as the Team Manager of UAE Team Emirates, Joxean Fernandez Matxin, who shared a photo with the Asturian coach.
