Marcelino García Toral

Asturian night on ‘Radio Marca’

Marcelino García Toral was the guest of the legendary programme 'Goles', hosted by Pedro Pablo Parrado. There was time to talk about past issues, the current situation and future options.

While waiting for the right sporting project, Marcelino García Toral continues to keep a close eye on current football news. This was demonstrated in the programme ‘Goles’, directed by Pedro Pablo Parrado on ‘Radio MARCA’. Marcelino was the protagonist of the broadcast on 24 January. It was a very interesting conversation between two Asturians who have been linked to football for many years and who are leaders in their respective sectors.

Pedro Pablo was interested in Marcelino’s routine, who confessed to being a faithful listener of his programme when he was a youth player, during this time away from the bench. The coach enjoys his family and friends while assuming that he has to be patient until an attractive option appears: “When you have to decide to go to a team in the middle of the season, you have more options to make a mistake. The ideal option would be to start a project next season”. Spanish national team and future plans.

Spanish national team and future plans

After months of speculation and information, the question of the national team coach’s job was unavoidable for Pedro Pablo. “Luis Enrique did very well. When the post became vacant, I had slight hopes, but they quickly dissipated. It’s a hope I still have. Now we have to support the new coach,” replied Marcelino.

Apart from options that he himself has ruled out (Real Madrid and FC Barcelona), or a possibility that is always mentioned when the future of Diego Pablo Simeone (Atlético de Madrid) is in doubt, the coach from Careñes is looking abroad: “We are attracted by the fact of going abroad. Financially, the Premier League has more possibilities, as the teams at the bottom of the table show”.

Another of the topics discussed was Athletic Club, days before the Copa del Rey against Valencia, with whom he won the title. He recalled his last professional experience and left a reflection: “It’s a different team to the rest. All the players are from there. You find yourself with 23 players who almost all came through the youth ranks. They are thinking of responding to the trust of their parents, their friends and their sense of belonging. This obligation can do them more harm than good”.
