Two titles in seven games. That is the astonishing fact that Marcelino García Toral can boast after Athletic’s victory in the Spanish Super Cup in Seville. From 25 May 2019 (Copa del Rey final won with Valencia CF) to win the Super Cup signed on 17 January 2021, a little over a year and a half has passed. Still, it has only meant seven games for the Asturian and his coaching staff (three with Athletic and four with Valencia before leaving the Club). More efficiency impossible.
Marcelino reached an agreement with the Bilbao team just two weeks ago. On 3 January, the Club signed him as a replacement for Gaizka Garitano was penned. In these 14 days, he managed Athletic Club in three games. He lost against FC Barcelona in LaLiga (2-3). However, in the Super Cup, he surprised Real Madrid in the semifinals and FC Barcelona in the final, respectively.
The Catalan team was also the opponent in the 2018/19 Copa del Rey final, also played in Seville (although this time at Benito Villamarín). In this case, Marcelino was at Valencia’s bench. Goals from Gameiro and Rodrigo neutralised Messi’s goal (1-2 was the result).
