Marcelino García Toral received the Gold and Diamond Badge from the Asturian Coaches Committee, the highest distinction the organisation awards to one of its coaches, during the celebration of Coaches’ Day in Noreña.
The award recognises a career that began in Asturias and has established Marcelino as one of the most highly regarded Spanish coaches of recent decades. From his first steps with Lealtad to his extensive career at the highest level, the coach from Careñes has managed clubs including Sporting de Gijón, Recreativo, Racing, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia, Athletic Club and Olympique de Marseille, achieving promotions, European qualifications and major trophies along the way.
Juanjo Corujo, president of the Asturian Coaches Committee, particularly highlighted Marcelino’s “total commitment to the Asturian committee”, describing him as a “privileged ambassador for coaches from the Principality”, while also praising the willingness of both Marcelino and his coaching staff to share their knowledge and experience.

Clearly moved by the occasion, Marcelino wanted to share the recognition with those who have accompanied him throughout his career. He had special words for Rubén Uría and Ismael Fernández, thanking them for their “deep friendship and loyalty”, and also remembered Eloy Olaya, who placed his trust in him during his early days at Sporting.
Marcelino concluded his speech with a message for his fellow coaches: “Believe in yourselves and in your dreams. Keep that enthusiasm alive, because sometimes dreams do come true.”
A message that encapsulates a career built from Asturias, shaped by perseverance, high standards and ambition, and now honoured with one of the most meaningful distinctions of all: recognition from the coaches of his own home region.
