The football world is in deep mourning following the passing of Javier Dorado, the former left-back who played for clubs such as Real Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, RCD Mallorca, and most notably, Real Sporting de Gijón. Dorado passed away on February 27, 2025, at the age of 48, after a long battle with leukemia.
Dorado crossed paths with Marcelino García Toral during his career at Sporting Gijón. Marcelino took charge of the first team in 2003 after coaching Sporting B from 2001 to 2003.
Dorado had two spells at the club—first on loan in the 2001-2002 season and then as a permanent player from 2003 to 2006.
The two worked together during the 2003-2004 season, with Marcelino beginning his tenure as a first-team coach and Dorado returning as a full-time Sporting player. Their time at the club forged a strong professional and personal bond.
Marcelino shared his sadness on social media: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Javier Dorado. We shared a dressing room at Sporting Gijón, where I had the privilege of knowing a great professional and an even better person. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”
