In good times and in bad times, support is shown through deeds and gestures. At the press conference prior to the match between Villarreal CF and UD Las Palmas, coach Marcelino García Toral began his speech by sending a message of support to the captain of the Canaries’ team, Kirian Rodríguez, who recently announced a relapse in his fight against cancer.
“On behalf of all the players and coaching staff, I would like to show our full support, affection, admiration and give Kirian all our strength. We know of his mental strength in the stage he has had before. We are convinced that he will make a full and speedy recovery, and we are sure that very soon we will see him back in the stadiums doing what he loves and works so hard for. On behalf of the squad and staff, all our support and encouragement”, said Marcelino.
This gesture of solidarity reflects the human and sporting values that Marcelino and his team promote, highlighting the importance of mutual support in difficult times. It is worth remembering that, in the previous season, during a clash between the two teams, Marcelino applauded Kirian Rodríguez when he was substituted, even though Villarreal were trailing 3-0 at the time.
This act showed the respect and admiration that the Asturian coach feels for the Canary Islands player, recognising his bravery and dedication both on and off the pitch. After the match, and following the team’s victory on the island, the Villarreal boss once again sent a message to the player.
