Marcelino García Toral

A new challenge

Marcelino, new Athletic Club coach

Marcelino García Toral undertakes a new challenge in his long career on the bench. The Asturian coach has committed to Athletic Club until 30 June 2022. In this adventure, and alongside him, his trusted coaching staff: Rubén Uría (assistant manager), Ismael Fernández (physical trainer), Sergio García (assistant physicist), Bruno Uría (analyst), Pablo Manzanet (analyst) and Alberto Torres (physical retrainer).

After taking control of the Athletic bench, Marcelino’s first big challenge will be the Spanish Super Cup, where they will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals. The final of the Copa del Rey against Real Sociedad shines on the horizon (postponed last year due to the pandemic).

Athletic will be an essential step in a successful journey. Since his debut as a coach at CD Lealtad –which he managed to promote to Segunda B in 1998-Marcelino has gone through several clubs and has accomplished significant achievements in most of them. The Copa del Rey title won with Valencia CF in 2019, the promotions to LaLiga with Recreativo de Huelva (2006), Zaragoza (2009) and Villarreal (2013) or the two historical milestones for Racing (qualification for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup and the 2007/08 Copa del Rey semi-finals). With him on the bench, Villarreal (in 2016) and Valencia (in 2018 and 2019) qualified for the Champions League. In addition, with the Castellón club, he reached the semi-finals of the 2015/16 Europa League.

Thanks to his work and coaching staff, Marcelino has twice won the ‘Miguel Muñoz Trophy’ as a LaLiga coach (2007 and 2018) and once a Second Division coach (2009).
